‘Last Tango in Paris’ Actress Didn’t Consent To Rape Scene

Controversial director Bernardo Bertolucci dropped a bombshell revelation about the famous rape scene in his 1972 film “Last Tango in Paris.”

Bertolucci revealed in a recently surfaced interview that he and actor Marlon Brando conspired to shoot the scene without actress Maria Schneider’s consent in order to make for more authentic acting.

In the scene, Brando’s character uses a stick of butter as a lubricant to rape Schneider’s character Jeanne, apparently without ever informing the actress of what was going to happen.

“I wanted her to act humiliated. I think she hated me and also Marlon because we didn’t tell her,” Bertolucci says in a 2013 video recorded at the La Cinémathèque Française in Paris, which has just resurfaced.

“To obtain something I think you have to be completely free. I didn’t want Maria to act her humiliation, her rage, I wanted Maria to feel… the rage and humiliation. Then she hated me for all of her life,” he continued in the clip that was recorded after Schneider passed away from cancer in 2011.

Just before she passed, she spoke out about the scene, which was widely regarded as controversial at the time.

She was just 19 during filming, while Brando was 48. Schneider said she was informed about the scene just as it was about to take place.

Bertolucci revealed in the interview that he and Brando had just decided on the use of butter the morning before shooting the scene — which was shot in one take.

“I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci,” she told the Daily Mail in 2007.

The actress explained that she should have called an agent or lawyer to the scene because no one should be forced to do something like that, but she didn’t think of it at the time.

She would never film a nude scene again after that.
