Costa Rica In The Nude

Doing what we all think about – going nude in a public, is not so easy in a conservative culture like Costa Rica. What can be a more liberating sensation than removing one’s clothes?

Add to that the sensation, thrill and excitement that comes from the shedding of clothing with your partner in an open environment, in public if you will, going totally au-naturel without the restrictions of society.

Nudism or naturism is a cultural and political movement practising, advocating and defending social nudity in private and in public. It may also refer to a lifestyle based on personal, family and/or social nudism.

Several other terms (“social nudity”, “public nudity”, “skinny dipping”, “sunning”, and, recently, “clothes-free”) have been proposed as alternative terms for nudism, but none has found the same widespread public acceptance as the older terms “naturism” and “nudism”.

The naturist philosophy has several sources, many of which can be traced back to early 20th century health and fitness philosophies in Germany, though the concepts of returning to nature and creating equality are also cited as inspiration.

From Germany the idea spread to the UK, Canada, the United States and beyond where a network of clubs developed. The model of German naturism is to promote naturist family and recreational sports, with the German Association for Free Body Culture (DFK) being a member of the German Olympic Sport Federation (DOSB). French naturism developed on the basis of large holiday complexes. This in turn influenced Quebec and the United States. A subsequent development was tourist naturism, where nudist resorts would be built to cater for the nudist tourist, without any local base. This concept is most noticeable in the Caribbean. Nevertheless, most naturist activity takes place at local naturist clubs, especially in Western countries.

Alternatively, people interested in social nudity can attend clothes-free beaches and other types of ad-hoc nudist events. At these venues, participants generally need not belong to a naturist club.

Social nudism is nudism in a social context, either at one’s home with friends or with acquaintances at a nudist facility or event, such as a naturist club, community centre, resort, or other facility. (The terms are loosely defined and there are some regional differences.)

Nudity in social contexts has been practised in various forms by many cultures at all time periods. In Western society nowadays, social nudity is most frequently encountered in the contexts of bathing, swimming and in saunas, whether in single-sex groups, within the family or with mixed-sex friends
In Costa Rica there are a several options for social nudism, hotels that are “clothing optional”, offering a nudism experience, combined with aspects of eroticism to its visitors.

Up in the mountains of Birri de Heredia we find the Hotel Desire Costa Rica where you can relax in one of two swimming pools – one of which is nudist, an outdoor hot tub, hiking trails, tennis court, table tennis, pool table, gym and library. The Hotel Desite is an adults only Costa Rica hotel and resort that is dedicated to the nudist lifestyle. The two clothing optional pools are surrounded by linen clothed cabana beds that permit privacy should guests so desire.

High Dreams – Naranjo

Located only 40 minutes from the San José airport, High Dreams hotel offers complete privacy for the nudist and a haven for sex adventurists. At the hotel couples are free to do whatever they want, provided they do not interfere with the freedom of other couples. It features a spa, three massage rooms, jacuzzi and sauna. There is also a disco and bar, tanning, terrace and a restaurant.

Costa Rica Nudist Beaches

Costa Rica has no law or act prohibiting nudity in its beaches, though social convention limits full nudity,  though topless sunbathing seems to be tolerated on certain beaches. As long as you are not offending anyone, you are not likely to get into trouble. At the same time, please do not consider it to be

Playa Grande (Guanacaste) – is one of several “unofficial” nudr beaches in the country, located north of the beach town of Tamarindo, it is a beach where nudists are welcome in the northern area, just keep it quiet.

Manuel Antonio (south of Quepos) is a popular place for all kinds of tourists, and is primarily a more conservative place to sunbathe and play, however, north of the public area is a nice little area where you will find a lot of topless basking. Sometimes, though rare, you will even find completely nude beach-goers. This is also known to be the gay and lesbian friendly part of the beach. The locals call it Playa de Playos.

Playa Montezuma is the perfect place for those who are of the “bohemian” persuasion. This is perhaps the most budget friendly of get-aways and attracts a wide and colorful spectrum of liberal minded folk like backpackers, gypsies, surfers, street musicians and other fun loving tourists and locals. As if the entertaining mix of locals and tourists, and the veritable smorgisboard of cuisine in Playa Montezuma isn’t enough, just take a scenic drive (or hike) farther North and behold Playa Grande, a secluded, yet vibrant patch of beach that just comes to life with art, surfing, bonfires, and of course, the option to go bare!

Keep in mind that though there may be no one else around, you may still be in plain view of tourists hiking the trails along the hill overlooking the sea. In the past, the park guards have merely requested naked sunbathers to put their clothes back on.
