COSTA RICA EXTRA — Sad news to pass along. Carol Ann Susi, the actress who voiced the character of Mrs. Wolowitz on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory, died yesterday after a battle with cancer.

Susi portrayed the mother of Howard (Simon Helberg), and had been a castmember of the show since 2007. Although her voice was often heard (and imitated), Susi’s face never appeared on the program. Warner Bros. Television, CBS and the show’s producers put out a statement about the loss of Susi:

“The Big Bang Theory family has lost a beloved member today with the passing of Carol Ann Susi, who hilariously and memorably voiced the role of Mrs. Wolowitz. Unseen by viewers, the Mrs. Wolowitz character became a bit of a mystery throughout the show’s eight seasons. What was not a mystery, however, was Carol Ann’s immense talent and comedic timing, which were on display during each unforgettable appearance. In addition to her talent, Carol Ann was a constant source of joy and kindness to all.”

Susi had been working steadily as a character actress since the mid-1970s. She caught her first break playing the character of Monique Marmelstein on Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and had appeared as a guest star on programs as diverse as Who’s The Boss, Seinfeld, E.R., and Grey’s Anatomy over the course of the last 30 years. Susi was 62 years old.
