COSTA RICA EXTRA – María Eugenia Donoso was near death from anorexia. She stopped fighting her body when a friend died of the same disease and managed to recover and has now created the first modeling agency for plus sizes.
In Ecuador, it is estimated that 38% of the population, about five million people, are overweight.
The now 29 year old model entered the world of fashion at 18. “They told me I had to lose weight. I doubled my exercise.s I stopped eating and generated a rejection of food,” she recalls.
At 1.7 metres tall, she weighed only 44 kgs and because of the anorexia, lost her teeth, suffered from insomnia and has problems with her liver and thyroid, which is today causing her overweightness.
Donoso said after psychological treatment she was able to gain several kilos, but suffered a relapse. She resorted to a “lingual mesh”, a new and very controversial procedure that involves applying surgical material on the tongue to remove the sensation of tast and prevent eating, but the procedure led to a kidney infection, the disorders completely changing her body.
Recovered, she decided to continue in modeling, 2012 founding the Plus Trends agency, with more than 20 models for large sizes.
